Excerpt from How to Write to an Ex-Lover
by Melissa Kirsch
Indiana Review

The letter begins, my dear, here's an update:
the apartment is fraught with flies, I'm living
with houseflies, dozens of them, many unswattable.
or perhaps my dear, since you became a tangelo,
that is, something hybrid, a composite
of many torturous experiences, something
undefinable, so we have to make up a name
for you, the apartment has filled up
with houseflies. I've heard
that every time a fly lands, it pees.
The result of the fly-sized gash
in the windowscreen is perhaps thousands of
          puddles
of fly piss, invisible, but everywhere.
I didn't expect it, and in winter, too,
when we assume all the flies to be dead,
or to have migrated. My dear, here's an update:
or look what I've discovered: impromptu
species interaction, the earth is a hive for it.
