It was too hard to keep making things up. Plus it seemed wasteful given the volume of words already circulating. In a gradient, color functions as a narrative, so I was free to focus on other things. I went to the Brookyn Museum and wrote down captions in the Islamic room. I noticed weather reports, manuals, the conversations of strangers. Sometimes I was naming colors to give myself that cool job and sometimes I was pretending that the paint chip was a painting or a photograph or an object or a racehorse or just anything other than what it was. Is that wrong? I went around to all the hardware stores in my neighborhood. It had to be Dutch Boy because the fronts are blank. It's also a color wheel now that all bets are off. --S.H. |
