The poem appeared as graffiti underneath an overpass in Switzerland which I noticed while I was traveling through last summer. I immediately wrote down the “equation” and carried it with me back to the states. I knew I wanted to do something with it…I was obsessed by its simplicity and romanced by its cryptic message, which I believe all graffiti to hold (as in “the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls” – Simon and Garfunkel). Six months later, I gave it a title that encompassed my feelings about the work. The title is lifted from a Wallace Stevens poem of the same name.
