for eating and a nest
too frightening to displace.

I am here beneath the wind,
the bird-of-paradise, the empty pail,
your pantry, your desire
to carry on as if nothing has happened.
I am here while you go
about your day planning
to get to me like the box
of hazardous household waste
corroding in your basement.
You never do.
