Let’s blame it on rope.
That having two ends makes it
a courtesy on our part to pull both.

And so it goes, we heave
I strain, and see you diminish.
Your knuckles whiten, and I understand
that I must pull harder, that one day
with a stretch we will stand back to back.

I'm having trouble with phrases like

on our part
and so it goes
knuckles whiten (very cliche)

They seem flat and without life
can the poet share more of the experience of this
even with its moralistic stance I think we can be touched by some kind of imagery - more descriptive phrases please.

Excellent title, and 'man' is He not You (at least in my case)
