Variation by Cavafy on a Theme of Tarrega's
(Revision x+1)

Sorry! - one more word exchange ("flails" >> "affects" in S2), while customer service is still open:

At times his mind is clear - he can recall
the day and hour he heard that melody
float by him on a breeze of history
so faint as hardly to be felt at all.

His left hand spavined in a fretless clasp,
his right affects arpeggios - pulgar,
indicio, medio, annular -
his tremolo no longer in their grasp.

He wants to ask the Little Sister, "Do
you know what rosaries my fingers used
to tell on gut and silver? Annular,
medio, indicio, pulgar."

But all that he can manage is a last
adagio of tears, through which he hears
his mother laughing with the Sister at
how womanlike her weakling son appears.
