Pittsburgh, a year earlier

Things we construct can become too big,
(buildings, ideas, our need for another)
inhuman, overpowering, trapping us
and crushing us under their weight.

The few people walking the streets,
not watching the game on TV
seem to carry the city on their shoulders
like Atlases unequal to the task.

If ever "too big" had an image and a voice
it would be footsteps in the snow
on a Pittsburgh sidewalk

and the moaning sound of winter,
Orpheus with snow in his mouth,
singing through canyons of steel.
