Badiou Notes from Lecture: The Subject of Art A Lacanian Ink Event April 1, 2005

The glorious body of the event is a work of art.” – Alain Badiou

Is = multiplicity = mathematics, eg. - being as such -
a thing exists – existence – something
that is happening – being is something
happens – happening must appear + disappear
being qua being – multiplicity
two words – world + event –events
happen in a world – to probe events
that happen in a world – Event = Trace
World = Body – subsist, a subject
is always a relation between a trace
+ body creating subject – the world
(in this case) of art – the question is
what is an artistic event – a “new” trace –
materialist, materializing, materialism of art

experimentation- vs. the limits of “death”
the final determination-
to take a public stance in one direction/position-
“Enjoyment” is an experimentation of death in life
“jouissance”                          of the limits of the body in life
(the) Subject (of) “enjoyment” is the Western paradigm today
…sacrifice…the war between enjoyment/sacrifice
“The War On Terror” is finally –

What is the common between them- death.

Possibility of subjective paradigms…???

-maintain distance between
Trace and/+ body to keep the subjective
alive and possible

5 Problems Transcendency vs. Experimentation

1. A real event is something affirmative.
2. To have an event that is not a trace but does not leave a trace.
3. What constitutes a new body (matter).
4. What are the consequences of all art (discipline of consequences).
5. Immanent infinity (of body ?)
                                                                                                        What “is”

to solve to say possibilities
in the artistic possibilities
how to answer these questions…
[He adds]
What is an art world? A “situation of art”-
between sensibility + form
what can be formed, formalized of sensibility?
[Beauty is boring…so they say but…]
what is form and what is not form.
“form + inform” formal vs. informal
an artistic event is the becoming form from
something that was not…

[ I like his illustrations ]

[achieving the dignity of a work of art.]

name as body, to new something new in the
work which events itself in the world of art
this could be new experimentation, [a] new tendency
of artistic creation – comes in this subjectivity
is the immanent infinity – infinity of form itself
[perception] – new form is new access –
new manner of thinking about the possibility
using artistic determination to clarify political
determination – [in/with nature] to find humanity -
