In “New Zealand” we saw the Savage Lancewood tree
And it was there I thought of my father
With his handsome shyness, the foxholes, the grenades
The Oak Leaf Cluster and the first lieutenant’s bars
The evening decades later when he rang Whangarei
Too drunk to know which ghost he had dialed
While all through those climbs, those labeled walkways
The scent of some unnamed blossoms caught us
Again and again by surprise
