The Prose Poem: An International Journal is published annually by Providence
College. It is the only international journal dedicated to the publishing
of prose poetry, essays on prose poetry, and reviews of recently published
books of prose poems. Each volume also includes a constantly expanding
bibliography on the prose poem. Although we have published many well-known
authors, we seek out the work of new prose poets. Unlike most journals, we
have no "preliminary" readers. Most of the unsolicited submissions we
receive are read by the editor; the remaining ones are reviewed by the two
assistant editors. In short, we don't care who you are. We are looking for
the best prose poetry being written.
With the publication of four anthologies over the last five years, some
people have argued that the state of prose poetry has improved, but as
recently as this year a university press refused to review a manuscript of
prose poems, arguing that it was "funded to publish only poetry." Moreover,
unless you have already established yourself as a verse poet, you will have
a difficult time publishing a first-book of prose poems, as many of my
contributors have discovered. But The Prose Poem: An International Journal
at least provides a place where the work of various prose poets can be
published, a place where editors can see someone's prose poetry in the
context of other prose poems.
